Lego recently opened up a contest to relaunch the Bionicle Theme. This is st least the third gold / platinum mask that Lego has made for the Bionicle line.
This image is found here. I think it was ultimately from here.

This is the woman from Lego that sent this to the winner in Alaska.

Here is the announcement from Lego ReBrick.
“To celebrate the coming relaunch of LEGO® Bionicle®, The LEGO Group is teaming up with the LEGO fansites BZPower, RusBionicle, Bionifigs, Pockyland, EuroBricks and our own LEGO ReBrick to conduct an epic building competition where a winner from each site will go head-to-head for the grand prize of a 14 karat gold Bionicle mask pictured below! ”
Each of the winners from these five sites went head to head to create the baddest villian that they could come up with.
Per Lego ReBrick… here
“We invite you to build the baddest villain you can imagine, using a minimum of 75% LEGO® Constraction/Technic bricks and no more than 25% LEGO System bricks. ”
The winner was recently announced here.

Here is the winning entry from their Flickr Account.
Here is a picture and a video of a prior Solid Gold Bionicle mask that was given away in the past.
This new one is a little more rare as the prior one had at least 5 made. It looks like people are willing to pay about 4,000 + for this prior mask. Who knows what this one will be worth. See below for an estimate of its value.
Here is another pic from reddit per this article. http://www.reddit.com/r/bioniclelego/comments/1m4ic7/solid_gold_kanohi_hau/
This kid said he won it at a Toys R U competition in NY. This article also states that 30 of these exist.
We can probably base the value on the recent sale of the Platinum Bionicle mask that recently sold for 15,000 to the same person that reviewed the gold one above. You can read about this here.

Also, here is an image of the platinum mask as well from the second article that just sold for $15,000.
This mask is made up of three troy ounces of Platinum!
Here is a showing of his collection.
It appears that the Platinum mask was given away in a contest in 2003 per the article above. “The Platinum Avohkii Mask of Light was the grand prize in the Cartoon Network’s Toonami Sweepstakes in October 2003. An 11-year-old Santa Rosa boy, Chase Koches, won the mask, along with a number of other prizes, including Bionicle toys and Lego sets, a DVD player, Nike Bionicle athletic shoes and a 36-inch flat-screen television.”
It looks like this was put up on eBay and eventually sold to Huley (the guy with the gold mask above), but not through eBay. I remember seeing this on eBay a few years back and thinking wow, that is a lot of coin.
And here are some of the pics from the eBay auction.
I bet that Hurley is pretty irritated about this as he now needs to talk someone else into selling of these to him for a crazy amount of money again. And this one is just like the last one. Only one exists.
Here is the Press Democrat article that look like it reported on this first.
As I read through this article, it looks like this guy is a serious collector of Bionicle masks. As a minifigure collector, it seems like it would be difficult to just collect the masks. It is almost like just collecting the heads off of the minifigures? What do you think. I would think that they would want the entire Bionicle set, not just the masks.
I wonder if we need a site listing all Bionicle Mask and the estimated value of these?
